Transit Watch
The staff of the Newark Museum's Dreyfuss Planetarium and the North Jersey Astronomical Group (NJAG) will have solar telescopes set up at Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange on Monday, May 9 for the rare transit of Mercury.
A transit occurs when a planet passes in between the Earth & Sun and is visible on the disk of the Sun. This Mercury transit starts at 7:12 am. Due to the small size of Mercury, a solar telescope will be needed to view the event.
Weather permitting, solar telescopes will be set up at Eagle Rock Reservation near the 9/11 memorial for the public to safely view the event. For directions use 1 Crest Drive West Orange, NJ. This is a free event. If the event needs to be cancelled due to the weather, a message will be left on the planetarium's hotline at 973-596-6529 after 5 a.m. on the day of the event.
