Live Lunar Eclipse Coverage

Sunday, Jan 20, 2019

Showtime: 7:30pm-10:30pm, PST

Online only at: www.facebook.com/Exploratorium

Join the Exploratorium for live coverage of the lunar eclipse on Sunday, January 20th, 2019.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and covers the Moon with its shadow. The eclipsed Moon sometimes appears to turn red, earning it the nickname of “Blood Moon.”

During the three-hour lunar eclipse, the Exploratorium will broadcast a telescope view of the Moon live from Pier 15 on San Francisco’s Embarcadero—we’ll begin just before partial eclipse, continue through totality, and end about 20 minutes before partial eclipse ends.

Along with the sight of Earth’s shadow moving across the Moon, you can experience live commentary from Exploratorium scientists; they’ll also be taking questions, so don’t forget to join the conversation online. Finally, listen to the evolution of a special audio track that creates a real-time, generative musical composition based on the features and geometry of a 3-D model of the Moon, shifting and changing as the eclipse continues.
